Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhu\n\npada, the Founder-Acarya of the International Society for\nKf$r}a Consciousness who has delivered the \"Light of the\nBhagawata\" to the whole world. We are pleased to present\nfor his pleasure the first fully illustrated, color publication of\nhis sublime work \"Light of the Bhagawata\" in the English\nlanguage.\nOf all His Divine Grace's writings, this work is perhaps the\nmost unique. It was written in Vrindavan in 1961 in response\nto an invitation to attend a world conference, the Congress\nfor Cultivating the Human Spirit, held in Japan. As most of\nthe participants to the Conference were from the Orient,\nSrTia Prabhupada considered deeply how he could best present the timeless teachings of the SrTmad Bhagawatam suitable to the Oriental people. The original Bhagavatam was\nwritten over 5,000 years ago as an extremely large book\ncomposed of 18,000 verses. Participants to the conference\nwould not have the time to hear it all. He therefore chose the\ntenth canto, twentieth chapter of SrTmad-Bhagavatam for\npresentation.\nThe twentieth chapter is a description of the autumn season in Vrindavan, the place of Lord Kf$r}a's appearance. SrTia\n\nVII\n\n", "Light_of_the_Bhagavata-1984_first_edition_SCAN#p0011": "Prabhupada knew that the Oriental people were very fond of\nhearing descriptions of nature and that the time of the autumn season is particularly auspicious to them. Presenting\nspiritual philosophy by examples from nature would be best\nfor their understanding. For each seasonal phenomenon, a\nparallel teaching could be given. For example, the dark\ncloudy evening of the rainy autumn season when no stars\nare visible is compared to the present materia_listic, godless\ncivilization when the bright stars of the Bhagawata's wisdom\n(the devotees and scriptures) are temporarily obscured.\nAltogether SrTia Prabhupada composed 48 commentaries to\n\ngo along with the verses of the chapter.\n\nSrTia Prabhupada's plan was that the organizers of the\nconference should find a qualified Oriental artist to illustrate\neach verse, and he also wrote directions from which the\nartist could design each painting. He hoped that the paintings and their accompanying explanations would make an\nimpressive display for visitors to the conference. If possible\nhe wished that a book might also be published containing\nthe illustrations and the texts.\nDue to unfortunate circumstances, SrTia Prabhupada was\nunable to attend the conference and the whole project of\n\"Light of the Bhagawata\" was postponed. In fact, at the time\nof SrTia Prabhupada's disappearance the \"Light of the Bhagawata\" still remained unpublished, and the illustrations not\nyet painted. Only recently has \"Light of the Bhagawata\"\nbeen published in English and Chinese.\nThe color illustrations were done by the renowned artist\nMadame Yun-sheng Li, whose mature creative talent and\nsensitive brushwork alone could properly complement\n\nviii\n\n", "Light_of_the_Bhagavata-1984_first_edition_SCAN#p0012": "Prabhupada's beautiful descriptions of the autumn season.\nThus the beautifully effulgent \"Light of the Bha.gawata\" may\nnow shine upon the world.\nThis is the first English edition which contains the beautiful\ncolor reproductions of Madame Li's work, 48 paintings completed in less than a year's time, meticulous in their detail\ndespite her advanced age and sometimes failing eyesight.\nUndoubtedly this collection presents the culmination of her\nlong distinguished career as one of the great artists of modern China. Her Gongbi style of painting, together with S rTla\nPrabhupada's poetic descriptions which appear alongside,\nmake for a unique blending of the world's two oldest cultural\ntraditions- India and China. The \"Light of the Bhagawata\"\nalso appears in the Chinese language complete with color\nillustrations.\nWe sincerely hope that readers will appreciate the simplicity and clarity with which S rTia Prabhupada has commented\non these verses.\nThis material world is but a reflection of the pure spiritual\nworld from which the \"Light of the Bha.gawata\" emanates.\nNature itself, as well as the whole cosmic creation, has its\noriginal counterpart in the spiritual world. The order and\npatterns which we see set about in nature are intentionally\ndesigned to illustrate spiritual truths. Indeed, the very existence of nature and its intricate balance is proof for any\nhonest man of the existence of the Supreme Being, the\nSupreme Personality of Godhead, K.r!?r:Ja.\nThe Publishers\n\nix\n\n", "Light_of_the_Bhagavata-1984_first_edition_SCAN#p0013": "1\n\nThe arrival of clouds, accompanied by thunder and flashes of\nlightning all over the sky, provides a picture of life-giving hope.\n\nCovered by deep bluish clouds, the sky appears artificially dressed. The\nthunder and lightning within the clouds are signs of hope for a new way\nof life.\n\n", "Light_of_the_Bhagavata-1984_first_edition_SCAN#p0014": "The serene sky, limitlessly expansive, is compared to the\nAbsolute Truth. The living entities are truths manifested in relation\nwith the modes of material nature. The deep bluish cloud covers\nonly an insignificant portion of the limitless sky, and this fractional\ncovering is compared to the quality of ignorance, or forgetfulness\nof the real nature of the living being. A living entity is as pure as\nthe limitless sky. He becomes covered by the cloud of forgetfulness, however, in his tendency for enjoying the material world.\nBecause of this quality, called tamas (ignorance), he considers\nhimself different from the Absolute Whole and forgets his purity,\nwhich is like that of the clear sky. This forgetfulness gives rise to\nseparatism in false ego. Thus the forgetful living entities, individually and collectively, make sounds like thundering clouds: \"I\nam this,\" \"It is ours,\" or \"It is mine.\" This mood of false separatism is called the quality of rajas, and it gives rise to a creative\nforce for separate lordship over the mode of tamas. The flash of\nlightning is the only beam of hope that can lead one to the path of\nknowledge, and therefore it is compared to the mode of sattva, or\ngoodness.\nThe limitless sky, or the all-pervading Absolute Truth (Brahman), is nondifferent from the covered portion of the sky, but\nsimultaneously the whole sky is different from the fractional portion that is liable to be covered by the dark cloud. The cloud,\naccompanied by thunder and lightning, cannot possibly cover the\nlimitless sky. Therefore the Absolute Truth, which is compared to\nthe whole sky, is simultaneously one with the manifested living\nbeing and different from him. The living being is only a sample of\nthe Absolute Truth and is prone to be covered by the circumstantial cloud of ignorance.\n2\n\n", "Light_of_the_Bhagavata-1984_first_edition_SCAN#p0015": "There are two parties of philosophers, generally known as the\nmonists and the dualists. The monist believes in the oneness of\nthe Absolute Truth and the living entity, but the dualist believes in\nthe separate identity of the living being and the Absolute Truth.\nAbove these two classes of philosophers is the philosophy of\nacintya bhedabheda tattva, or the truth of simultaneous oneness\nand difference. This philosophy was propounded by Lord\n\nS rT\n\nCaitanya Mahaprabhu in His explanation of the Vedanta-sotras.\nThe Vedanta is the medium of philosophical interpretations, and\nthus the Vedanta cannot be the absolute property of any particular\nclass of philosopher. A sincere seeker of the Absolute Truth is\ncalled a Vedantist. Veda means \"knowledge.\" Any department of\nknowledge is called a part of the Vedic knowledge, and Vedanta\nmeans the ultimate conclusion of all branches of knowledge. As\nphilosophy is called the science of all sciences, Vedanta is the\nultimate philosophy of all philosophical speculations .•\n\n2 The scorching heat of the sun evaporates water from the\n\nseas, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, and there is little\nwater anywhere. Yet just at the right moment,\ntorrents of rain begin to fall everywhere in the land, even on\nthe hard stones, and the land becomes overflooded.\n3\n\n", "Light_of_the_Bhagavata-1984_first_edition_SCAN#p0016": "", "Light_of_the_Bhagavata-1984_first_edition_SCAN#p0017": "The welfare state imposes upon its citizens scorching taxes in\nvarious forms - income tax, sales tax, land tax, terminal tax,\nexcise tax, customs tax, and so many other taxes. But in due\ncourse, when the taxes accumulate into a large sum of money,\nthey are utilized for the welfare of the citizens in various ways.\nNonetheless, sometimes it happens that the benefits of the taxes\nfall like rains on stone-hearted men in the state who are unable to\nutilize the money properly and who squander it for sense gratification.\nThe common man supposes the unequal distribution of rain to\nrepresent nature's wrath for our sinful acts. There is truth in this.\nThus to have an equal distribution of state-raised taxes, the\ncitizens need to be scrupulously honest and virtuous. They\nshould be honest in the payment of taxes to the state and should\nhave honest representatives to look over the administration. In\nthe modern setup of democratic states the citizens can have no\ncause for grievances, because the whole administration is conducted by the people themselves. If the people themselves are\ndishonest,\n\nthe administrative machinery must be corrupt.\n\nAlthough a damned government of the people may be given a\ngood or fancy name, if the people are not good they cannot have\na good government, regardless of which party governs the administration. Therefore good character in the consciousness of the\nmass of people is the first principle necessary for a good government and equal distribution of wealth.\nIn ancient days the kings were taught lessons in political philosophy by ideal teachers, and the citizens from village to village\nwere taught the principles of self-realization according to the\nVedic codes for both the material and the spiritual upliftment of\nsociety. Therefore the citizens were God conscious and honest in\ntheir dealings, and the kings were responsible for the welfare of\nthe state. Therefore people must learn to\nperform yajflas to satisfy four different ages, and in the present\nage of iron industry the yajfla that enlightens the mind of the\nmasses for God consciousness is recommended. This process of\n\nyajfla is called the sankTrtana-yajfla, or mass congregation for\ninvoking man's lost spiritual consciousness. As soon as this\nmovement is taken up through spiritual singing, dancing, and\nfeasting, the people will automatically become obedient and\nhonest.\nObedience is the first law of discipline. The people have become disobedient to the laws of God, and therefore neither rain\nnor wealth is equally distributed. A man who is ultimately disobedient cannot have any good qualification. When disobedient leaders lead the disobedient people, the whole atmosphere of the\nadministration becomes polluted and full of dangers, as when a\nblind man leads several other blind men. The state taxes, therefore, should be spent to build the character of the people in\ngeneral. Thus the Lord has\npreserved water on three fourths of the\nglobe and has made it salty to preserve it.\nSalty water does not decompose, and that\nis the arrangement of Providence. The\nLord has engaged the powerful sun to\nevaporate the water of planets like earth\nand distill it into clear water in the clouds\nand then stock it on the peaks of mountains, as we stock water in overhead tanks\nfor later distribution. Therefore we must first activate our dormant love of\nGodhead by following the prescribed rules and by following in the\nfootsteps of the authorities who are actually fixed in love of\nGodhead. A loving wife, husband, or friend may for some time be\nmaddened by the absence of the beloved. Such a state of mind,\nhowever, is not permanent. The loving husband or wife takes to\nanother an·d forgets everything of the past. This is so because\nthere is no reality to such relationships in the material world.\nThe spiritual situation, however, is completely different. A bona\nfide lover of God could never forget Him, even in exchan·ge for\neverything else. The devotee of the Lord cannot be happy in any\n1\n·\n\ncircumstance without the Lord. In the absence of the Lord the\ndevotee associates with Him by remembering His separation, and\nbecause the Lord is absolute the devotee's feeling of separation\nis transcendentally more relishable than direct contact. This is\npossible only when we develop genuine love for Him. In that state\nthe devotee is always with the Lord by feelings of separation,\nwhich become more acute and intolerable in suitable circumstances. The pure devotees do not\nwish any return from the Lord in exchange for their service; they\ndo not make business exchanges with the Lord. But the Lord, out\nof His own accord, fulfills all the desires of the devotees.\nIt may appear that a devotee of the Lord is becoming poorer\nand poorer in terms of material prosperity, but factually he is not.\nThe typical example is the Par:1<;Javas.
