Before leaving India for America, Śrīla Prabhupāda spent nearly a decade in his humble quarters (1) at the historic Rādhā-Dāmodara temple, in Lord Kṛṣṇa's land of Vṛndāvana. Here he studied and began translating the Vedic literatures, kept the memory of his spiritual master (whose portrait graces the wall), and made plans for executing his spiritual master's order—"Spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness throughout the English-speaking world." "His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda is doing great work," Prime Minister Shastri said during this time (2), "and his books are significant contributions to the salvation of mankind." In 1965 Śrīmatī Sumati Morarjee (3), the head of India's largest shipping firm, gave Śrīla Prabhupāda free passage to America.
